Pop
La musique pop, entendue en son sens premier, est apparue aux États-Unis dans les années 1960.
L’utilisation du mot « pop » (pour « popular » en anglais) pour désigner un style de musique bien particulier apparaît pour la première fois aux États-Unis dans les années 1920. Mais c’est bien durant la décennie 1960-1970 que le terme est largement employé. On appelle alors « pop », la musique des Beatles et de nombreux autres groupes anglais et américains. Cela permet notamment de distinguer la pop du rock’n’roll originel (Elvis Presley…) puis, au cours des années 1960, du terme « rock », jugé plus « dur ».
La pop revêt ensuite un caractère plus commercial, durant les années 1970 et surtout 1980. Au cours des années suivantes, on ajoutera « pop » à de nombreux autres styles de musique, comme le pop-rock ou la Britpop (Blur, Oasis…).
Aujourd’hui, le terme pop est très « galvaudé ». Il sert aussi bien à définir le style d’un groupe comme Coldplay que celui d’une artiste comme Lady Gaga.
