La musique rock (rock music en anglais) est, à l’origine, une évolution du rock’n’roll américain des années 50. Apparu au cours des années 60, le rock a depuis une descendance extraordinaire, si bien qu’aujourd’hui, il se confond le plus souvent avec tout type de « musique électrique » (ou électrisée).

Origines

L’histoire du rock débute à la fin des années 1950, à l’apogée du rock’n’roll. Ce dernier ne « convient » plus à la jeune génération (née aux alentours de 1945) qui souhaite plus de « rock » et moins de « roll ». Une musique plus puissante, plus électrique, aux textes plus engagés (ou plus en adéquation avec les tourments de cette nouvelle génération) naît alors (mais si le processus de naissance du rock ne se fit pas, évidemment, en une seule nuit). Les médias l’appelleront les premiers « rock music ». Elle sera la musique des héritiers d’Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Bill Haley…

Années 60

Le rock des années 60 est une musique contestataire, très influencée par le blues américain et anglais. Les groupes rock les plus influents de l’époque s’appellent les Beatles, les Rolling Stones, les Beach Boys… et des milliers d’autres. Le rock connaît ses premières évolutions propres, comme l’acid rock, le rock psychédélique, le pop-rock, le rock-garage…

Années 70

Les années 70 voit une nouvelle fois le rock « exploser » en plusieurs familles, le hard rock (Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple…), le glam rock (Kiss…), le rock metal (AC/DC)… Le courant le plus « médiatisé » de l’époque sera le punk, apparu aux États-Unis (MC5, Ramones, Stooges…) puis en Angleterre (Sex Pistols, Clash…)

Années 80 et 90

Dans les années 1980, le rock est dominé, en France comme aux États-Unis, par la New Wave (Indochine, The Cure, Joy Division…). A la fin des années 80 et surtout jusqu’au milieu des années 95, le rock « renaît » une nouvelle fois, aux États-Unis, avec le grunge (Pearl Jam, Nirvana…). AU même moment, un nouveau rock, baptisé Britpop, apparaît aux États-Unis (Blur, Oasis, Radiohead, Pulp…).

Depuis les années 2000

Depuis les années 2000, le rock n’a cessé de renaître et renaître encore. Avec les Strokes, les White Stripes et beaucoup d’autres, le rock garage connaît un revival, tout comme le punk avec les Libertines… Le rock depuis les années 2000 n’a également pas cessé de se mélanger avec d’autres styles, comme le rap, l’électro, la pop (ce dernier mélange donnant naissance notamment au teenage rock avec Sum 41, Blink 182…)…

Le rock en France

Le rock en France s’installe véritablement au cours des années 60. Sauf chez les initiés, le rock aura toujours, au moins jusqu’aux années 80, un temps de retard en France, ce qui n’empêche pas l’apparition d’une scène française assez riche et somme toute assez expérimentale. Dans les années 80 et 90, certains groupes de rock français (Téléphone, Noir Désir…) ou new wave (Indochine) témoignent de la richesse rock de l’Hexagone. Depuis les années 2000, le rock français a largement suivi les courants dominants du rock anglo-saxon sans vraiment travailler sur son éventuelle spécificité.
